First Civilizations

In reading Chapter 2 we learn how civilization emerged from the agricultural revolution. Due to agriculture there was an abundance of food, enough to support growing communities. As agriculture grew so did the population, when population began to grow so humans created civilizations. In the text we see that within these civilizations inequality began among genders and male power began to grow. Social classes began to grow creating more separation between the wealthy and the poor. The wealthy had more rights than the poor, but what I found interested was that the even though there was gender inequality the wealthy women had more rights in these new found "civilizations." As time went on we know that women were stripped of their rights, which is still something that women are fighting for today. Social classes still exist because people with more money have more power over the people who stand lower on the social ladder.

  1. I agree with your viewpoint on agriculture. I believe it is very interesting how it grew to play a big role in our society today and it's also crazy how civilizations developed to what they are now.

Chapter 3 Documents

Which statement of Tacitus might you regard as reliable, and which are more suspect? Why? I do not think that we can take any statements from Tacitus as reliable except for statements that are purely factual. This is because it states that Tacitus never visited the lands of the people he described. He only relied on others works of writing and story telling.  We cannot regard him as reliable becuase we do not even know if there is any credibility in his statements.

China and Class

In China during the Han dynasty choose officials based off of performance, but some were still chosen through social class and standings. Landowners have a lot of power. The increase in population caused the peasants to sell their land to wealthier landowners in order to keep themselves afloat. The peasants had a hard time living, most of them lived in full households and struggled. Conditioned like this caused peasants to begin rebellions, and join gangs of bandits. The peasants devastated the economy which later led to the overthrow of the dynasty.

Chinese Empire

In this blog about chapter 3 I read the chapter but personally I would like to focus on the rise and fall of the Chinese empire, because I am more intrigued in the history of China based on my culture. China was one of the first civilizations which was ruled under the Xia, Shang and Zhou dynasty, but at this time China was known as a warring state. China was saved by Qin Shihuang who wanted to reunify the Chinese empire. He seemed to have succeed, and I think this was because the Chinese believed in a moral force ("Heaven") that helped regulate the universe.  Unlike the Roman empire the Chinese empire took much less time to build. The Shihuang dynasty did not last long, but after the Han dynasty followed, during the Han dynasty helped to moderate the harshness of the policies that Qin Shihuang created . The Han dynasty focused more on Confucianism, which was introduced my the Chinese philosopher Confucius. The Han dynasty established the political patterns that lasted into th...
